City: Austin, TX
Dream Career: Stylist
What advice do you have for dealing with stress?
Turn your phone off and run outside as fast as you can! When I am stressed I go for a run or hike. I love hiking and camping. While living in Austin, I can be active without having to leave the city. And if I have the time I drive somewhere new to explore.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed trying to keep up and I’ve learned the hard way that if you are too stressed, you won’t be the best version of yourself. You have to make time for yourself to release from stress.
What makes you feel strong?
After the election, I recognized that I found strength in conversations with my mother, my close friends and the women I work with each day. Many days and nights were filled with conversations about women’s rights, and more importantly how we were going to be bolder, and stronger more than ever. Each conversation ended positively and really helped me move forward and feel empowered.
Find yourself in a slump, how do you motivate yourself?
Coffee and Leslie Knope. After an episode or two of Parks and Rec, I’m ready channel my inner Leslie Knope and get to work. Or I plan a trip. What’s more motivating than knowing you get to go see something new and exciting?
You’re in a room of teenage girls, what is the best advice you can give them?
Travel as much as you can. I grew up in a very small town in the Midwest and traveling created an opportunity to learn so much more about the world than I would have if I stayed in rural Iowa. Be kind and truly treat others how you would want to be treated.
Who is one female, other than your mother, that propelled, supported, or gave you an opportunity in your life or career? What was her best advice?
Sicily Boutique owner and my former manager, Neda Shirazi. She is by far my most stylish mentor in my life. I had moved back to Iowa City and she gave me the opportunity to be her store manager at Sicily Boutique. We bonded over our love of fashion and she will forever be one of the most influential women in my life. We worked hard together and her best advice for me was to start wearing hi-rise denim! We all know how hard it is to find the right fit.
Neda always supported me in dreaming bigger and provided me with an opportunity to create ideas and grow as a young woman in business.
I think in 2017 it’s important that women…because…
Go high, when they go low because our fight for equality is not over and we must support each other through this year and the years to follow. We can not buckle under pressure. If we can unite with love, we must resist with love. Throughout the next four years we may not have a choice in the decisions that will be made by our president, however, we do hold the responsibility of our choice in the ways we respond and react to those decisions.
The best thing a woman can be is
List three things you love right now
Tacos. Vetements. Coconut chai tea.
